The main function of the surface mat is to cover up the glass fiber texture, improve the surface finish and anti-leakage; at the same time, improve the surface interlayer shear strength and surface toughness by improving the quality of the resin-rich layer on the surface of the glass fiber reinforced plastic product;

Everyone may know that its function is well understood, but the characteristics of the surface felt of different materials may not be well understood, so let's make a brief introduction.

There are generally two types of conventional surface felts:

One: glass fiber surface felt

Glass fiber surface mat, as a gel coat reinforced felt, is an isotropically distributed fiber. Its softness makes it suitable for edges and corners, irregular shapes and complex curved surfaces, and is suitable for a variety of composite material processes. It can be combined with EP , VE, UP and PU resins dissolve quickly, forming a resin-rich layer between the fiber gaps, giving a smooth and flat surface, effectively avoiding the pitting on the surface after forming and the fiber texture hidden in the fibers. It also highlights the enhanced interlaminar shear strength, surface toughness and excellent chemical and corrosion resistance.

Two: polyester surface felt

The unique production process and resin permeability treatment process of polyester fiber surface felt determine that it has the characteristics of smooth surface, uniform fiber dispersion, soft hand feel, good air permeability, and fast resin penetration.

Polyester surface mat is used in glass fiber reinforced plastic products. Its good air permeability and resin affinity enable resin to penetrate quickly and completely eliminate air bubbles and white stains. Fabric texture, improve surface finish and anti-leakage; at the same time, improve the surface interlayer shear strength and surface toughness by improving the quality of resin-rich layer on the surface of FRP products;

The difference between the two is:

1. From the flame retardant point of view, glass fiber is a flame retardant material, while polyester fiber is not.

2. The glass fiber surface mat has high strength and no ductility; while the polyester fiber surface felt has low strength, especially low warp and weft strength, and good softness.

3. Since the acid resistance of polyester fiber far exceeds that of glass fiber, its resistance to hydrofluoric acid (HF) is particularly outstanding, so it can improve the chemical resistance of the product; glass fiber surface mat is generally used for extensive Type material compounding, while polyester fiber surface felt is used for relatively fine type material compounding.
