What is the difference between glass fiber and carbon fiber

Publish Time: 2022-03-31     Origin: Site

Glass fiber is an inorganic non-metallic material with excellent properties. Glass balls or waste glass are used as raw materials through high melting, wire drawing, winding, weaving and other processes, and finally form glass fibers. The diameter of a glass fiber is between a few microns and twenty meters, which is equivalent to a hair. One-fifth to one-tenth the diameter of silk, a bundle of fibers is composed of hundreds or thousands of monofilaments.

Characteristics of glass fiber:

Most people think that glass is a fragile and hard object, which is not suitable for structural materials. However, if it is drawn into silk, the strength will be greatly increased and it has flexibility, so it can become an excellent structural material after changing the shape with resin.

The strength of glass fiber increases as its diameter decreases. These characteristics make the use of glass fibers far more extensive than other types of fibers.

carbon fiber:

Inorganic fibers made of carbon. The carbon content of the fibers is greater than 90%. Generally divided into three categories: ordinary, high-strength and high-model. Compared with glass fiber (GF), the Young's modulus is more than 3 times; compared with Kevlar fiber (KF-49), not only the Young's modulus is about 2 times, but also in organic solvent, acid , It does not swell or swell in alkali, and its corrosion resistance is outstanding.

Carbon fiber is a fibrous carbon material. It is stronger than steel, less dense than aluminum, more resistant to corrosion than stainless steel, more resistant to high temperature than heat-resistant steel, can conduct electricity like copper, and has electrical, thermal and mechanical properties.

Carbon fiber can be processed into fabric, felt, mat, belt, paper and other materials. In traditional use, carbon fiber is generally not used alone except as a thermal insulation material, and is mostly added to resin, metal, ceramic, concrete and other materials as a reinforcing material to form a composite material. Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials can be used as aircraft structural materials, electromagnetic shielding and antistatic materials, artificial ligaments and other body substitute materials, as well as in the manufacture of rocket casings, motor boats, industrial robots, automotive leaf springs and drive shafts. Carbon fiber is widely used in civil, military, construction, chemical, industrial, aerospace and super sports car fields.
